Nov 29, 2011 · In a CLOSE ratio 1st is 2.32, 2nd is 1.69, 3rd is 1.29, 4th is 1.00 (slower off line) In a WIDE ratio 1st is 2.78, 2nd is 1.93, 3rd is 1.36, 4th is 1.00 (faster off line) RPM's will vary in 1-3rd but will equal out in 4th. Meaning same MPG This car is basically original, the motor is original, new top, interior is original besides carpet.

Jul 20, 2018 · 3.73 still my choice. OD = .67 of final gear. AKA 3.73=2.48 gear. 3.55=2.36 gearing. To much of a drop unless you have a light car or 300+ honest HP. It doesn't look like much. But the engine will know the difference. As for 1st gear in the trans, personal choice. Ford even made the toploader in close ratio or wide ratio.

Only the 427,428 and 429`s had the big input, so a 390 toploader would be the small input, regardless of close vs. wide ratios.
